LONDON, July 19 — In the sleek corridors of DeepMind’s London headquarters, a quiet revolution in synthetic audio was set in motion nearly a decade ago. WaveNet, a deep convolutional neural network for generating raw audio, was outlined in a paper published in September 2016. The technique directly models raw waveforms, synthesising output one sample at a time by sampling from a categorical distribution of a signal value encoded using a μ-law companding transformation and quantised to 256 possible values.

Against this backdrop of traditional text-to-spe

Before WaveNet, most synthetic speech systems relied on concatenative or parametric methods. Concatenative TTS stitched together pre-recorded fragments of human speech, which produced robotic, disjointed output and required vast libraries of audio.

Parametric models used statistical representations of speech features but often sounded muffled or artificial. These approaches struggled to capture the subtle acoustic variations and expressiveness of natural speech. WaveNet’s breakthrough lay in its ability to generate raw audio waveforms directly, rather than processing compressed or engineered features.

This allowed the model to learn and reproduce fine-grained acoustic details—such as breath sounds, pitch inflections, and emotional tone—that had previously eluded computational approaches. The result was a leap in naturalness, enabling synthetic voices that could rival human recordings for many applications.

The significance extended beyond speech synthesis. WaveNet demonstrated that deep neural networks could model complex, high-dimensional audio signals with fidelity, opening the door to generative AI in music, sound design, and other creative fields. Its architecture influenced later text-to-speech systems, voice assistants, and audio generation tools developed by major technology companies.

The technique also highlighted the potential of autoregressive models for sequential data, a paradigm that would later underpin breakthroughs in language and image generation.
