Early Life

Peter Mukerjea was born on 21 November 1956 in London to Indian parents. He was raised in Mumbai, India, where his father worked as a doctor. He attended The Doon School in Dehradun, graduating in 1971. After his schooling, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue further education, attending West Herts College and taking evening classes in business management. He has a younger brother, Gautam Mukerjea, who runs a lifestyle magazine named Planet Goa.

In May 1978, Peter married Shabnam Singh. The couple had two sons, Rabin, born in 1980, and Rahul, born in 1984. They divorced in 1994. Rahul Mukerjea currently lives in Badripur near Dehradun with his mother.

Peter began his career in marketing with Heinz and Storehouse plc in the United Kingdom. He later worked as an Account Director with Ogilvy & Mather in New Delhi and London, followed by a role as Regional Group Account Director with DDB Needham in Hong Kong.

Rise

In 1993, Peter Mukerjea joined STAR TV as Sales Director (India) based in Hong Kong. He shortly thereafter moved to Mumbai to establish STAR TV’s advertising sales division in India. In 1996, he acquired additional responsibility for the Middle East market. His leadership and strategic vision led to his promotion to Executive Vice President in 1997.

In 1999, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of STAR India, a position he held for eight years until 2007. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the growth and expansion of the network across India. In 2000, he was named the first Indian Tennessee Squire by Brown-Forman Corporation, the makers of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, in recognition of his contributions to business and brand building.

In 2002, through an introduction by Alyque Padamsee, Peter met Indrani Bora, an HR consultant 16 years his junior. Later that year, they married in a small ceremony in the garden house of Suhel Seth in New Delhi. After the marriage, Indrani’s daughter from a previous marriage, Vidhie Khanna, moved in with them and took the Mukerjea name.

Peak

In 2005, Indrani introduced her children from a previous relationship, Sheena Bora and Mikhail Bora, to Peter as her younger siblings. The following year, in 2006, Sheena Bora moved in with the Mukerjea family and enrolled at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Peter continued to serve as CEO of STAR India until 2007, overseeing a period of significant growth and influence in the Indian television landscape.

In 2007, after leaving STAR India, Peter joined INX Media as Chief Strategy Officer. He remained in this role until 2009, when he quit the company and retired to Bristol, United Kingdom. His career in television and media spanned from 1974 to 2009, marking over three decades of professional activity.

In 2017, Peter divorced his second wife, Indrani Mukerjea. The divorce marked the end of a marriage that had begun in 2002 and had been closely tied to both his personal and professional life during the height of his career.

Turning Point

In November 2015, Peter Mukerjea was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case. At the time of his arrest, he was held in judicial custody at Mumbai Central Jail. The arrest came as a significant development in a case that had drawn widespread public and media attention.

In February 2016, he was formally charged under the Indian Penal Code under Sections 302 (murder), 120-B (conspiracy), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). The charges were related to the alleged involvement in the disappearance and death of Sheena Bora, who was Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter from a previous relationship and had been presented to Peter as her younger sister.

Peter Mukerjea remained in custody for several years following his arrest. He was released on bail on 20 March 2020, after more than four years in judicial custody. His release marked a shift in the legal proceedings, though the case continued to remain active in the public discourse.

Legacy/Aftermath

Following his release on bail in March 2020, Peter Mukerjea retreated from the public eye. In February 2021, his first book, titled ‘STARSTRUCK’ – Confessions of a TV Executive, was published by Westland Amazon. The book offered a personal account of his career in the television industry, reflecting on his years at STAR India and his experiences in media leadership.

His personal life has undergone significant changes since the arrest and legal proceedings. His marriage to Indrani Mukerjea ended in divorce in 2017, and his relationship with her children, particularly Sheena Bora, became central to the criminal case against him. The case has had lasting repercussions on his reputation and public standing.

As of the information available, Peter Mukerjea has not been convicted of any charges related to the Sheena Bora murder case. The legal process has seen him charged, held in custody, and later released on bail, with the case continuing to proceed through the judicial system. He remains a retired television executive living in the United Kingdom.

Wider Significance

The career arc of Peter Mukerjea reflects the intersection of corporate success in India’s media industry and the complexities that can arise in personal and legal domains. His rise as CEO of STAR India positioned him as a key figure in the globalization of Indian television during the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period marked by rapid expansion and foreign investment in the sector.

The Sheena Bora murder case, in which he was arrested and charged, brought intense scrutiny not only to his personal life but also to the broader culture of celebrity, media influence, and accountability in India. The case highlighted how personal relationships and family dynamics can become entangled with legal and investigative processes, especially when public figures are involved.

His story serves as a case study in the fragility of reputation, where decades of professional achievement can be overshadowed by allegations and legal challenges. The publication of his memoir after his release on bail indicates an effort to contextualize his life and career on his own terms, even as the legal proceedings surrounding the case continue to unfold.
